What causes erectile dysfunction?

The causes of ED can be both physical and psychological. Most often, it’s down to the penis getting a reduced blood flow. Erectile problems can also be due to anxiety, stress and depression.

Often, ED can be a symptom of a health condition that’s affecting your heart and blood vessels, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. You should have a health check to see if there’s an underlying condition causing your ED.

What are the symptoms?

When you have erectile dysfunction, you’re either unable to get an erection or sustain an erection long enough to have sex or masturbate.

Depending on what’s causing your ED, you might still get an erection at other times, for example on waking up.
