Warticon wart treatment

"An effective treatment for external genital warts that are soft and fleshy to the touch. It works to stop the warts growing and burns away the affected tissue."

What is Warticon wart treatment?

Warticon cream works to stop warts from growing. For most people it clears warts within 4 weeks.

How does it work?

The active ingredient in Warticon genital warts treatment cream is an antiviral called podophyllotoxin. When you apply it directly to warts, it works to burn away the affected tissue.

How to use Warticon wart treatment

You should apply the cream twice a day (morning and evening, every 12 hours) for 3 days. Then have a break for 4 days, applying no Warticon cream. Use the treatment in this way for 4 weeks.

Always wash your hands after using Warticon cream and remember to screw the lid back on tightly. As Warticon is flammable, you should stay away from naked flames and lit cigarettes while you’re applying it and immediately afterwards.

Treatment results

For most people, warts disappear after applying Warticon for 4 weeks, though some people need to continue the treatment for longer.

If your warts are still there after using Warticon cream for 4 weeks as prescribed, please contact us in your Patient Record or speak to your GP.

Never use more than the prescribed dose of Warticon. It won’t make the cream work faster or more effectively and it can increase your risk of side effects.

While you can’t cure genital warts, they can be managed with the right treatment. After your Warticon treatment, it’s quite likely warts will reappear in the future, especially when your immune system is under stress.

Warticon wart treatment FAQs

  • What are genital warts?

Genital warts are fleshy growths around the genitals and anus, or occasionally the mouth and hands. They’re caused by a sexually transmitted infection (STI) called the human papillomavirus (HPV).

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Warticon?

If you miss a dose, apply Warticon cream as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular schedule. Never apply double the amount of cream to make up for missing a dose.

  • Who should not use Warticon wart treatment?

    Don’t use Warticon cream if:

    • You’re allergic (hypersensitive) to podophyllotoxin or any of its other ingredients.
    • Your warts are on skin that’s broken, damaged or bleeding.
    • You’re already using another medication that contains podophyllotoxin.
    • You shouldn't use Warticon cream while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. If you think you could be pregnant, we advise taking a test before starting this treatment or speaking to your GP.
  • Is Warticon wart treatment safe?

Warticon cream is generally considered safe to use if you get it prescribed. However, if you experience any side effects you think could be due to Warticon, please message us through your Patient Record or talk to your GP.

  • How to prevent genital warts

Practising safe sex by using condoms or dental dams can help prevent you getting genital warts. However, neither offers complete protection.

  • Where can I buy Warticon wart treatment?

You can’t get Warticon cream over the counter. You’ll need a prescription to buy it, even if you’re using an online service.

One of our clinicians can prescribe it after an online consultation where you confirm you’ve tested positive for genital warts.

  • Can I buy Warticon wart treatment online?

One of our clinicians can prescribe Warticon cream for you, after a short online consultation where you confirm you’ve tested positive for genital warts.

  • Taking other medicines when using Warticon wart treatment

You should be able to use Warticon alongside other medications. So, our online clinicians can prescribe it safely, you’ll need to let us know which prescription, over-the-counter medicines and any recreational drugs you’re taking regularly.

  • Can I have sex during treatment?

You should stop having sex during treatment with Warticon cream. Instead wait until your warts have cleared up and the skin has healed.

Will it have any effect on condoms?

Warticon cream shouldn’t affect condoms. If you do have sex while you have genital warts, always use a condom to help stop them spreading.

During treatment with Warticon, a condom will help protect your partner from coming into contact with podophyllotoxin, which is an irritant.

  • Alternative treatments

We can also prescribe Aldara wart cream. Its active ingredient, imiquimod, stimulates your body's immune system to destroy both hard and soft warts including those around the anus.

You can get stronger creams that contain the active ingredient trichloroacetic acid (TCA). As these medications can damage skin and cause pain if used incorrectly, you’ll need to visit a GP practice or sexual health clinic to get them applied.

Where appropriate, warts can also be physically removed through laser surgery, excision, electrosurgery, or cryotherapy.

  • Do warts come back after Warticon wart treatment?

While you can’t cure genital warts, they can be managed with the right treatment. After using Warticon cream, it’s quite likely warts will reappear in the future, especially when your immune system is under stress.
