Vydura

"A wafer thin medication for relief from migraines. You can also take it to help prevent attacks if you get regular migraines."

What is Vydura?

Vydura is a migraine medication that contains rimegepant and comes in the form of a wafer you place under your tongue.

You can use it for relief from a migraine, or regularly to help prevent attacks.

How does it work?

Vydura contains the active ingredient rimegepant, which blocks a key pain-signalling chemical in triggering migraines.

You can use it to treat a migraine when you feel it coming on to relieve symptoms or stop them getting worse. If you get migraines regularly, you can take Vydura every other day to help prevent attacks.

How to use Vydura

When you’re taking Vydura to treat a migraine attack, place one wafer below your tongue and let it dissolve. There’s no need to take it with food or drink. If needed, you can take another Vydura melt 24 hours after this first dose.

If you’re taking Vydura to help prevent migraines, the dose is one wafer every other day.

Important: Never take more than one Vydura wafer within 24 hours.

Treatment results

Rimegepant, the active ingredient in Vydura, has been shown to be effective for treating migraines and preventing frequent attacks.

A study looking at rimegepant found that, of the people who took the medication to treat migraine attacks:

  • 86% needed no other pain relief in the first 24 hours
  • 59% experienced pain relief within two hours
  • 21% were pain-free within two hours
  • 35% were free of their ‘most bothersome symptom’ within two hours
  • 42% had continued pain relief between two and 48 hours after the first dose

In a different study that looked at using rimegepant to prevent migraine, people had:

  • 4.3 fewer monthly migraine days on average
  • 50% reduction in their monthly migraine days

Side effects of Vydura

As with all medications, some people may experience side effects when taking Vydura (rimegepant). But these tend to be rare.

The only common side effect reported is a feeling of sickness (nausea). One trial found a possible risk of urinary tract infection and dizziness. In very rare instances, Vydura might cause a shortness of breath or an allergic reaction showing up as a rash.
