Clenil

"A standard inhaler that contains beclometasone dipropionate to help prevent asthma symptoms from occurring."

What is Clenil Modulite?

Clenil is an inhaler that contains beclometasone dipropionate to help prevent asthma symptoms occurring.

Is Clenil Modulite a preventer or reliever?

Clenil Modulite is a brown-coloured preventer inhaler.

How does it work?

A Clenil Modulite inhaler contains the active ingredient beclometasone dipropionate, a type of steroid known as corticosteroids. Steroids work by reducing inflammation and swelling in your airways, helping to provide relief from asthma symptoms and make breathing easier.

How to use a Clenil Modulite inhaler

  1. Get into an upright position, either standing or sitting.
  2. Take off the inhaler’s mouthpiece cover and make sure it's clean.
  3. Give the inhaler 4-5 good shakes.
  4. Now, position your thumb on the base of the inhaler and your fingers on top of the canister, holding it upright. Your hand should form a 'C' shape.
  5. Exhale fully until comfortable, then place the mouthpiece between your teeth. Seal your lips around it without biting.
  6. Begin breathing in through your mouth and just as you start your breath, push down on the canister's top to release the medicine.
  7. Keep breathing in deeply and steadily. Once you've taken your full breath, hold it for as long as you comfortably can.
  8. After 30 seconds, you can take your second puff by repeating the process, if required.
  9. Afterwards, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out.
  10. Finally, make sure you put the mouthpiece cover back on to protect it.

Always read the patient information leaflet before use.

Once you've completed your short consultation, we can recommend and prescribe the dosage that's right for you. It's usually 1-2 puffs, twice each day. There are 4 different strengths of Clenil Modulite inhaler: 50mg, 100mg, 200mg and 250mg.

If there’s anything you need to ask, you can get in touch via your Patient Record.

Effectiveness

Although Clenil Modulite doesn't control your asthma immediately, it will begin working within a few days if you use the medicine as prescribed. By taking it every day, your Clenil Modulite inhaler can prevent attacks and control asthma symptoms like wheezing or night time coughing.

With asthma, there's always the possibility you’ll need a fast-acting medicine. That's why it's important to also have a reliever inhaler like Ventolin (salbutamol). Our clinicians can prescribe this.

Side effects of Clenil Modulite

Like all medications, some people may experience side effects while using Clenil Modulite. As it’s a medicine you inhale, it may irritate your throat or cause thrush in the mouth. To help avoid this, it’s advisable to brush your teeth and rinse or gargle with water after each use of the inhaler.

For full details of side effects and correct use, please see the Clenil Modulite patient information leaflet. And if you’re worried about side effects, you can contact us in your Patient Record.

Clenil FAQs

  • How long does Clenil Modulite take to work?

Typically, people see a noticeable difference in their symptoms within a week.

  • How often should I use my Clenil Modulite?

Your prescription will say exactly how often you should use your Clenil Modulite. It’s usually twice a day.

  • How long should I use my Clenil Modulite for?

Your prescription will tell you the length of time you'll need to keep taking your medication. Even if you think you feel well enough, it's important not to stop treatment unless a doctor says it’s safe to do so.

  • Who can use Clenil Modulite?

Your doctor or clinician will tell you if this medicine is right for you. However, it won’t be safe to use a Clenil Modulite inhaler if:

    • You have an allergy to beclometasone dipropionate or other specific ingredients. We’ll ask you this during your consultation.
    • Your asthma symptoms have ever caused you to receive intensive care treatment.
    • You become breathless or have a sudden asthma attack as Clenil Modulite won’t help. You’ll need a quick-acting reliever inhaler for this purpose and should always carry it with you.

Important: Our doctors can’t prescribe Clenil Modulite if you’ve needed hospital admission for your symptoms within the past 12 months.

  • Can I use Clenil Modulite while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Our clinicians won’t be able to prescribe this medication for you if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Where can I buy Clenil Modulite?

You can’t buy a Clenil Modulite over the counter at a pharmacy. You’ll need a prescription for the treatment, even if you’re using an online service.

One of our clinicians can prescribe this medication after an online consultation where we make sure it’s right for you. It only takes a few minutes. Once approved, you can pay for your prescription online for discreet home delivery or to pick up from any Well Pharmacy.

It’s a good idea to have two inhalers, in case you run out, forget to request a repeat prescription, or lose one.

  • What should I do if I get Clenil Modulite side effects?

If you experience any side effects with Clenil Modulite, you should get in touch with your GP, pharmacist, or asthma nurse. They may prescribe the lowest dose of the medicine or a different type of inhaler. Until then, carry on using your Clenil Modulite.

Important: If you start coughing, wheezing or get short of breath after using your inhaler, use a fast-acting reliever inhaler such as Ventolin (salbutamol) straight away. Then contact your doctor urgently to look again at your treatment.

  • Clenil Modulite warnings

You should speak to your GP, pharmacist, or asthma nurse before using Clenil Modulite if any of these apply to you:

    • You are being, or have ever been, treated for tuberculosis (TB).
    • You must avoid alcohol for any reason.
    • You notice your asthma symptoms are getting worse. For example, if you're experiencing more wheezing and breathlessness than usual, if your 'reliever' inhaler isn't working as well as it normally does, if you need to use your 'reliever' inhaler more frequently than before, or if your symptoms aren't improving. If this is the case, your doctor may need to adjust your treatment. This could mean increasing your steroid inhaler dose, prescribing steroid tablets, or changing your treatment completely. If you have a chest infection, they might also prescribe antibiotics.
    • You're switching from steroid tablets to an inhaler and find that even though your breathing is improving, you feel unwell in other ways. This may include developing a rash, eczema, a runny nose, or sneezing (rhinitis).

Important: Even if you think you feel well enough, it's important not to stop using your Clenil Modulite inhaler unless a doctor says it’s safe to do so.

  • Taking Clenil Modulite with other medications

As with all medications, Clenil Modulite can interact with certain other medicines. So, it’s important you let your clinician, or pharmacist know which prescription, over-the-counter medicines, or any recreational drugs you’re taking regularly.

  • How to dispose of Clenil Modulite

Always take any empty or unwanted inhalers to your pharmacy. They'll be able to dispose of them safely.

  • Alternative asthma treatments

Alongside prescribed medications, there are certain lifestyle adjustments you can also make to help manage your asthma. If you smoke or vape, quitting is particularly important as it can significantly lower your chances of getting asthma symptoms or attacks.

Some activities can also help you manage your asthma. Yoga and mindfulness can all help build strength, promote relaxation, and support better breathing. They can complement, but not replace, your regular asthma treatments
