Atovaquone with Proguanil tablets
"Atovaquone with Proguanil is an anti-malaria treatment you take before, during and after travelling to an area where you could be at risk. It’s the active ingredient in Malarone branded tablets."
What is Atovaquone with Proguanil?
Atovaquone with Proguanil is a daily tablet that protects you from malaria when you’re travelling to an area where you could be at risk.
How does it work?
When an infected mosquito bites, it transfers the malaria parasite into your blood. Atovaquone with Proguanil hydrochloride work together to kill the parasite before it can cause the disease.
Malaria is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, which injects the malaria parasite into your bloodstream when it feeds. This is what causes infection.
How to use Atovaquone with Proguanil
You should take 1 tablet at the same time each day and ideally with food or a milky drink.
How long should I take Atovaquone with Proguanil for?
You need to start taking tablets 1-2 days before you enter any malaria-risk regions. Then continue daily treatment throughout your stay and for 7 days after leaving the area.
What if I forget to take my dose?
When you buy Atovaquone with Proguanil hydrochloride, it’s important you complete the full course. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember and continue with your regular schedule. Never take a double dose to try and make up for a missed tablet. Just take your next dose at the usual time.
Treatment results
Protection starts from 1-2 days after beginning your course of treatment. This is why it’s important to start treatment before you arrive at your destination.
To maximise your protection, make sure you follow the instructions on your Atovaquone with Proguanil prescription and packaging.
Important: Atovaquone with Proguanil provides 95% protection against malaria when you combine it with mosquito bite prevention measures. So, remember to wear clothes that cover as much of your body as possible and apply 50% DEET insect repellent to your skin.
Side effects of Atovaquone with Proguanil
As with all medications, some people may experience side effects when taking Atovaquone with Proguanil. These include stomach pain, dizziness, headaches, nausea, diarrhoea, coughing, low mood, skin reactions, or vivid dreams. However, these side effects are uncommon and usually mild.
